Duties and Responsibilities: Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are the entry level of the profession. In Iowa they are responsible for utilizing their nursing knowledge and skills to care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled under the direction of physicians or registered nurses in structured health care settings.

Education: Becoming a licensed practical/vocational nurse requires completion of a formal training program plus supervised clinical instruction. Practical nursing educational programs are offered by vocational schools and community colleges, and require high school diploma or the equivalent. Some programs require passing an entrance exam.
